Just shy of her second birthday, Ava was diagnosed with Juvenile Arthritis. Her first symptoms included swelling in her wrist, which was written off as a sprain. After several weeks and multiple visits to the doctor, Ava was referred to an Orthopedic Specialist, who thought she had a fracture in growth plate not visible by X-ray. Our little Ava’s situation took a drastic turn for the worse: her fingers were so inflamed they wouldn’t bend, making it impossible for her to use her right hand; and her ankles swelled to the point that she could only walk on one foot while dragging her other foot, limping along.

Ava’s immune system was attacking her own healthy cells, which resulted in painful inflammation, swelling, fevers and stiffness. Juvenile arthritis can affect the joints in every part of the body including hands, fingers, knees, the jaw and even eyes and skin making everyday activities like walking, brushing teeth or eating a challenge.

Even from the onset, before medicine, Ava didn’t let JA slow her down…she even found a way to limp and chase her brother around the house! When she stopped using her right hand, Ava taught herself to eat, play and pick up her toys with her left. Nothing stopped her and that is why she is our Super Trooper! Ava’s inflammation is being controlled by a weekly injection that we give her at home. We have made great strides over the last few months and count our blessings daily. While Ava’s doctors have been amazing in her treatment; the Arthritis Foundation has also played a role. They have been a huge part of our treatment for Ava, providing educational resources and support that is unsurpassed. For this reason we are joining the Jingle Bell Run to help raise money for the foundation. We would be lost without them. So, get in the spirit this holiday season! Join our team, tie bells to your shoes, and dress as your favorite super hero.

Join Ava’s Super Troopers and help raise funds to cure arthritis. Together, we can make a difference for the 53 million adults and 300,000 children that suffer from arthritis pain and disability.
